THE CURRICULUM:
The statutory school curriculum, as laid down by the D.E.S. is taught in our school. However, we offer a wide range of extra curricular activities during breaks and after school. (2.30-3.30pm.)
Languages: Irish and English are taught. A Language Assistant (from a European Country) also promotes a European Language. In the past, we have had Spanish, German and Italian teachers, teaching the language and culture of their native countries. In addition, we offer French for pupils in 6 class – to prepare them for second level education. We encourage our pupils to participate in Feile Luimni Competitions.
P.E.: We encourage physical fitness with a variety of age appropriate games and we emphasise enjoyment and participation at all times. We offer hurling, gaelic football, athletics, basketball, soccer, volleyball and swimming.All chidren from 2 to 6 are expected to participate in swimming.We take part in Inter-School Competitions in hurling, gaelic football, soccer, athletics and basketball.
Music: Classes from 2 - 6 are encouraged to participate in” The Music in the Classroom Programme” which includes visits to the Concert Hall.Concerts are prepared and performed in the school during the term.Instrumental Music and Irish Dancing are taught in the school as an after school activity.
Expressive Arts: In addition to helping every child to attain a high level of self expression in music song and dance in the school day, we offer Speech and Drama classes after school.
Visual Arts: This subject is an important part of education here in St. Brigid’s. We offer after school art/craft classes where we invite recognised artists to work with the children in a variety of media. This is done with the help of Limerick School of Art and Design. Exhibitions of the children’s work are held regularly in the school.
Environment: St. Brigid’s School takes Environmental Education very seriously. We have a” no litter policy” which is supervised by the Green Council Committee. This year we have applied for the Green Flag. The school runs composting, vegetable gardening, bulb and tree planting activities. This year we are working on bird and tree trails.
